Getting there

By air: San Francisco has three main airports. The first is San Francisco International Airport which is on the west of the bay and is the one most widely used by international flights. On the opposite of the bay is Oakland International Airport and then there is San Jose International Airport is at the southern end of San Francisco Bay. These two serve flights mainly from just Canada and Mexico. All three are important gateways for domestic flights.

By train: Amtrak’s long distance trains travelling to San Francisco stop at Oakland Station on the east side of the bay.

By bus: Going to San Francisco via bus you’re more than likely going to end up on a Greyhound bus. They terminate at Transbay Terminal on Mission Street.

Getting around

By cable car: San Francisco’s cable cars are its most famous mode of transport. There are three lines in operation – the Powell-Hyde line, the Powell-Mason line and the California Street line. The first two are almost exclusively used by tourists, while the third one is used a lot by commuters as it travels through the city’s financial district and suburbs. A one-way journey costs $5 and an all-day ticket costs $11.

By trolley car/buses/streetcar/light rail: All these modes of transport are run by MUNI (San Francisco Municipal Railway). Between them they offer an extensive and efficient service to the entire city.

By BART: Standing for Bay Area Rapid Transport, the BART is the city’s underground network.
